Owning a house and keeping it stylish and neat can be quite challenging as the family size increases especially when you do not have maids to help out with the housekeeping. You may end up doing all sorts of repairs to save on cash. Thus you may end up purchasing items you may not need often.

To organize your home and declutter, you need to sort out your closet to remove items that you no longer use. You do this by

1. Cleaning out all drawers and closets: Open and clean out all drawers and closets. This action will show you items like screws, old paper, broken trinkets, personal effects that are no longer in good shape that you are still holding on to.

2.  Separate the useful items from those you'll likely never use: Separate the items that you are likely to use within the next six months from those you may never use within this time frame, ready to be packed into boxes.

3.  Shred all papers that are not useful and properly arrange those still in use: Shredding old paper will create space, eliminate clutter and dust build up in the certain corners the room.

4.  Store sorted items in boxes:  Put the separated items into boxes according to their quality. You could sell off your clothes online or donate them to charities. The same goes for tools and appliances.

One major decision you need to make if you want to declutter and organize your home is to address the pile-up of clothes, shoes, and gifts which accumulate over time as we buy new items in line with current trends.

Dropping clothing and toys everywhere in the room by family members is common if you have kids. And if you are like me and can't stand a messy room, then I'm sure you get that occasional stare from your spouse and children that screams 'why can't I find my things '.

The difference between a sloppy and an organized person is basically in the way they keep their home. Hence there is a need to arrange your home properly. Put all clothes on hangers and properly put them away from sight.

Fold clean clothes into drawers and remove all clothes from chairs and floor. Throw out anything that is not useful and you'll be amazed at how clean and spacious your home would be.

Arrange your shoes in boxes and store properly. Alternatively, you can use shoe racks to neatly arrange your shoes and place them where there is good air supply to ensure they last longer

Gather your dirty clothes in baskets.

Ever wondered how people who have spotless homes manage their dirty clothes?

They do not necessarily wash every day, they simply use a system that works. Instead of hiding dirty clothes inside the closet and risk fouling up the clean ones, keep a basket by your bathroom where you dump your dirty clothes and do not wait for it to overflow before you take it out for laundry.

You can keep a basket in your kid's room and encourage them to put their dirty clothes into the basket instead of dumping them on the bed or on the floor. Toys can also be put into baskets or boxes to prevent littering the room.

Use bookshelves to organize your home and add style.

There may be items like books and gifts which you want to hold on to, and as they pile up they make a mess of your home. Since you do not want to give them up, why not use a bookshelf to arrange these books and still put a touch of class in your home.

Using a bookshelf not only takes less space, but it also stores much more. Other items can be neatly put in boxes and stored in the bookshelf. Hence, bookshelves can serve as storage space for almost anything ranging from clothes arrangement where there is no wardrobe to shoe space. They can successfully help you store more and reduce clutter in the home.

Clear out your guest room

The guest room is usually the least used room in a house and many end up turning it int a dumping ground. Overcome this temptation and clear out everything you've dumped there. Put things in their correct places and make that space truly beautiful and organized.

Here in Africa, our parents and relatives show up without prior notice and when this happens, you don't have to start worrying about how the home looks because you've already kept the home neat and organized.
